What to Pack for a Dive Trip

The complete packing checklist for liveaboard diving trips.

Dive Gear Essentials

What you bring depends on whether you own equipment or plan to rent. Even if renting, certain personal items are worth bringing.

Always bring (even if renting):

• Mask (properly fitted to your face)

• Dive computer (familiar with your settings)

• Certification cards and logbook

• Reef-safe sunscreen

Consider bringing:

• Wetsuit or exposure suit (better fit than rentals)

• Fins (comfort and performance)

• SMB/safety sausage

• Dive knife or cutting tool

• Torch/flashlight

Camera and Electronics

Underwater photography is popular, and proper preparation prevents problems.

Camera gear:

• Camera and housing

• Strobes or video lights

• Arms and mounting hardware

• Spare batteries (lots!)

• Memory cards (more than you think)

• Silicone grease and o-ring kit

Other electronics:

• Chargers for all devices

• Universal power adapter

• Power strip or multi-plug

• Dry bag for topside protection

• Laptop/tablet for image review (optional)

Clothing and Personal Items

Pack light—cabin storage is limited, and you’ll spend most of your time in swimwear anyway.

Clothing:

• Swimsuits (2-3)

• Rashguard or sun protection shirts

• Light, quick-dry clothing for evenings

• Warm layer (boats can be cold with AC)

• Hat and sunglasses

• Sandals or flip-flops

Personal items:

• Toiletries (reef-safe!)

• Prescription medications

• Seasickness remedies

• Sunscreen (reef-safe)

• Insect repellent

• First aid basics

Documents and Money

Essential documents:

• Passport (valid for 6+ months)

• Dive certification cards

• Dive logbook

• Travel insurance documents

• Flight itineraries

• Boat confirmation/voucher

Money matters:

• Credit card for emergencies

• Cash in local currency for tips and extras

• Small USD bills are widely accepted

• Typical crew tip: $10-15 per person per day

Packing Tips

Luggage:

• Soft bags are easier to store than hard suitcases

• Keep dive gear in carry-on if possible

• Use packing cubes to maximize space

• Bring a small day bag for surface intervals

Weight considerations:

• Check airline luggage allowances (domestic flights may have lower limits)

• Rental gear at destination reduces luggage weight

• Some liveaboards offer equipment storage between trips

Don’t forget:

• Books or entertainment for surface intervals

• Notebook and pen for species identification

• Small gifts if visiting local communities

• Positive attitude and sense of adventure!
