Bazaruto is home to a significant population of dugongs. They have made a come back since the early 2000’s. It is difficult to provide an exact number of dugongs in the Park as they are elusive creatures and difficult to count.
An aerial survey conducted in 2021 revealed approximately 325 dugongs. This is the largest herd of western Indian Ocean dugongs seen since the 1960.
Nowadays, it is common to see them in and around the Marine Reserve.
These gentle giants are herbivores and depend on seagrass for their survival. Dugongs play a vital role in maintaining the marine ecosystem by controlling the seagrass density.
However, these endangered creatures are under threat from habitat loss, fishing accidents, and pollution.
The Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, established in 1971 to protect the islands’ ecosystem, is one of the important dugong habitats. Efforts are underway to protect the seagrass meadows, which serve as a vital feeding ground for dugongs and other marine animals.
